Lowering his head, he moved to drink from the pond, watching with vague interest as the fish inside swam away swiftly from his dipping muzzle. His tail twitched behind him as he rose, staring down into the depths at his reflection below. Bowing his head, he thought a silent thanks to the gods for providing the water before turning. The gods ruled over the forest with kindness and grace, and Varaki had no true desire to scorn them. A thanks was unnecessary but a kind gesture, in his opinion.
The sound of sticks and leaves cracking beneath a hoof caused Varaki's ear to twitch a little, but he made no move to flee. He turned slowly to examine the creature approaching him, his head lowering in a polite gesture to greet the buck that soon appeared. "Evening," he mumbled, his voice slightly gruff from keeping silent most of the day.

He'd since discovered that the heat in this forest would be perpetual - at least for him - as he'd somehow managed to consume a potion that birthed an inferno within his very body. It was constantly clawing and gnawing at him, trying desperately to escape in any way it knew how. He'd been experimenting lately, trying his best to make use of his inner flame. In return, the fire seemed to relax a bit, if he used it properly, and not cause him quite as much discomfort.
At this time he was performing one of his favorite tricks, setting his antlers on fire. They were seemingly the easiest part of him to control the flame on, as they were nearly indestructible by fire, unlike his hide which he had singed time and time again. Even now he looked down and a bit of the hair on his legs and chest was charred to a darker hue than normal - although it was hardly noticeable. Ryker snorted slightly and concentrated hard, extinguishing the flames that were swirling and sputtering around his antlers. The fire was ultimately squelched by his concentration and dissipated into a puff of smoke.
He shook his head vigorously to rid himself of the smoky after-scent and moved toward the pond he'd discovered earlier this morning. The leaves snarled in protest at his presence, but he ignored their cries for mercy. The red stag approached the pond with mild curiosity, noting the presence of a whitetail buck who was drinking from it's depths. The buck turned to face him, offering a greeting grunt. Ryker dipped his head lightly and offered a grunt but no speech. He had a purpose here, and that was to quench his unquenchable thirst. He dipped his cranium downward and lapped relentlessly at the water for a moment.
As he lifted his head and neck back to their normal positioning, a soft sizzling sound was made as the water dripped from Ryker's maw. "Hello." He snorted lightly, giving himself a small break before he intended to drink more from the pond. Ryker was forever thirsty thanks to the flame inside of him, though he loathed the liquid substance with a presence. Likewise, it loathed him, and sizzled every time he touched it.

Varaki's ears twitched a little at the smell; while he was certain the forest wasn't on fire, or he would have seen a far brighter flame, he couldn't help but feel curious about this newcomer and his scent. Sure enough, as the stag neared, Varaki spotted the fire lighting his horns as if he was carrying the very sun between his antlers. Intriguing... although this particular view wasn't a common sight, it wasn't uncommon either to see a stag or doe wandering around with some sort of power. Varaki wasn't sure about how these powers were accumulated, nor did he really have any interest in them. For now, he would wield his power through his strength.
The buck extinguished the flames on his head; it seemed as though he had quite a good control over whatever power he wielded. As the buck neared him, he gave an equal bow of the head. Much could be told about a forest inhabitant's personality based on greetings alone. Varaki watched in curiosity as the buck drank from the pond as well, the sizzling causing his ear to once again flick in a blend of interest and confusion. His nose twitched as well, the smell of smoke causing his heart rate to increase from instinct. He knew in his mind that nothing was wrong with the forest, but the need to flee from a potential fire was starting to grip him. He ignored it, though. Unless this stag decided to attack, he wouldn't move. Why should he?
His reluctance to speak from the need to drink caused Varaki's eyebrow to raise. "I suppose that you, too, found a potion within this forest's fantastic depths," he said after a few moments, letting the stag drink a little before mentioning it. If this male needed more time to drink, then he would and wouldn't address his comment until later. Either one was fine with the melanistic male; he was content with waiting. He was even considered patient by some.

Though he knew his thirst would never be satisfied, he could at least abate it for a short while. Again the sizzling resounded as he lifted his head and the last few drops of water dripped from his lips. He then turned his head to the other, who seemed to be eyeing him rather quizzically. Ryker's face remained sober as ever as he glanced over the whitetail. Ryker was much larger than the other buck due to the difference in species, so he had to look down ever so slightly to take in the full view of the stag. The other male was not small by any whitetail standards, though.
Another note was taken, this male was melanic, a deep ashen black all over. Ryker had always thought this to be an attractive trait, and was quite envious of the male before him for possessing it. As the male spoke up about what he'd seen, Ryker merely snorted once more before speaking. "Ah yes.. it's not all it's cracked up to be, though." That was the truth. So far Ryker had had far more side-effects than advantages with the potion he'd taken, but he'd figured out that day by day, as he learned to use his power, the side effects became less and less of a problem. If he used his abilities enough, the fire inside of him wasn't quite as hot and strong. It was this realization that helped him get through this insane time in his life.
He thought to comment on the male's 'winning the genetic lottery', but decided against it. Compliments weren't exactly his strong suit, in fact.. conversations weren't his strong suit. Therefore, he remained fairly silent. A small spark had jolted from his hoof and he stamped it it lightly, the soft thud making an echo through the otherwise quiet forest.

He wasn't shy with his staring, though, taking in all of the power fuming off of the stag's bulk like steam. He was most intrigued by the power... that power of flame, something revered and feared at the same time... necessary for life yet able to take it away at any moment's notice. The very element itself was intriguing to him... so much life and spontaneity, yet so much danger. Was it something that this male had chosen to use? Was it bestowed upon him at random? Varaki couldn't help but feel the need to quell these questions buzzing in his head.
He wasn't shy about that, either. After the male spoke, Varaki snorted a little in response, his head bowed in understanding. Fire was painful and could make a body weak... he couldn't see any, but he was sure that there were plenty of charred bits of fur all over this elk's body. "Indeed... if not kept in control, it could be dangerous to yourself and others... I am sure it makes you this thirsty, too," Varaki said, his head tilting to the side. Lowering his head slightly, he looked at the male a little more, now spotting very difficult to see bits of burnt fur. They were few in number, which showed this elk's surprising amount of self control. "Did it take long to master such powers?" He had many more questions... but it seemed this male wasn't much of one to converse. He didn't want to overwhelm the poor elk... and if he didn't ask all of his questions to this particular power-wielder, he could always bring them elsewhere. The entire forest was a source of knowledge.
ooc: agh, short again ;o; and i'm not sure about enemies, i could see them having a nice friendly rivalry so far! we'll see how it goes though, varaki could use either one ;)

ic; As much as it looked like Ryker was cool, calm, and collected about his newfound power, he was quite the opposite. He was a wreck since he'd first made a spark a week ago, and ever since he'd been trying his hardest just to control the fire inside. Most of the time it wasn't too difficult, but there were times - times when he was angry - that he could hardly manage to squelch it, and there'd been a time when he'd nearly burned the forest down. It was frightening, such a power, but at the same time he loved it. If he only knew a better way to control it!
"Yeah, so far I've managed to keep it under control though." Ryker shifted his weight as the male gazed an inquisitive eye at the burnt patches of fur. However, he knew there was no hiding it. As the man asked about his mastery of the power, Ryker snorted in disbelief, yet another puff of smoke entering the air. "Master? I think you've got it wrong.. the fire is my master, I live only to appease it now.
|
He let out a sigh, dipping his head back down for one final quick drink, before turning his attention fully to the stag. "I've just barely figured out the fire-on-the-antlers trick, I have no idea what else could happen. He had no idea why he'd just said that, but now that it was out he knew he couldn't take it back. His eyes blazed slightly, angry with himself for showing any sign of weakness, not to mention in front of a buck. Ryker's antlers were set ablaze once more, only this time he hadn't intended for them to be. It caught him by alarm, but the soft warmth was unusually comforting. ooc; sorry he doesn't offer up much.. questioning speech, that's just not his style, xD [/blockquote]

The buck spoke again, stating how the fire led him on a chain of blazing flames, commanding him to do its bidding. Varaki could certainly see it somehow; it demanded water from the poor creature, lest it consume his insides completely with heated energy. That must feel as if it were a cursed existence. Varaki really couldn't imagine it... but what power, what control one must feel when he gains the right to rule over this entity of elements that rested inside him... a strong part of Varaki wanted to quell that energy, to tame it and make it his own. Perhaps it was something that he would be able to find on his travels... or perhaps it would be bestowed upon him. He was never truly certain where these things were obtained.
Varaki bowed his head a little as the male turned to him, explaining the fiery antlers. "That is a colorful trick, as well... light your way through the night and keep enemies at bay... and they could certainly pack more damage than a normal stab of the antler," he stated, a small smile on his features. While protecting those he loved and called dear wasn't a thing that Varaki was bad at, it would be far easier with a formidable power such as that, too. Oh, he mustn't fixate on it, though, it was impolite. "And the control with merely that is far more difficult than anything the forest has experienced lately, I'm sure... what do they call you?" He flicked the tip of his ear again, tilting his head to the side. It seemed as though the buck was surprised at himself, perhaps by setting his horns alight again. Did he not intend it? It wasn't something Varaki would judge about, though. It all looked very difficult, but he was certain with time it would be even easier than walking.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,350,true] | [atrb=background,http://i45.tinypic.com/2lmtauh.jpg] He dipped his head to drink once more, and in doing so accidentally set an entire leg up to the hock in the watery depths. An irritated sizzling came forth, followed by a slight bubbling of the water before he withdrew his leg and left it curled upward while he continued to drink. Ryker snorted as he took his last draught and rose back up to normal height, setting his hoof on dry ground. "It certainly does make night travel much more convenient, not to mention it's handy on cold nights. Although that did get me in trouble once.. He'd learned rather quickly that sleeping while sustaining and controlling the flame was nearly impossible - at least so far - and that incident had nearly burned the forest down. He was only consoled by the idea that Rottair and Estreya would probably have put the fire out in the event of it's getting out of control, but of this fact he could never be certain.
"I'm afraid most don't call me anything. I'm not the most sociable of beings.. I think this is probably the longest conversation I've shared with anyone in a long time." He paused, reflecting on whether or not he ought to give his name or not. Then, deciding it could do little harm, Ryker continued. "My name is Ryker. Deciding it was only polite to ask the other's name - though he really could live without it - Ryker spoke once more to his own displeasure. "And your calling?" All this time his antlers were perpetually burning, though not a mark was on them. The warmth from the flame was a welcome relief, as it was taking away some of the heat inside his core. Ryker was beginning to think this fire within him was it's own being, an entity all it's own that he must feed, exercise, and appease in order to have any semblance of a normal life in this forest. Perhaps this was true..
ooc; that's cool, mine's short too :P

The water, bubbling and sizzling, must be too much for the buck's power to handle. It was clearly both a gift and a curse for this buck to carry these powers... "That does indeed sound useful..." His ear flapped again in slight concern. What had happened? Oh, it could be quite bad to press, and Varaki's polite personality got the better of his curiosity this time. He stayed silent, not diving into more questions until later. Perhaps once they were on name terms.
The buck spoke again, throwing the other for a loop. Amber eyes stared skeptically at the creature, tilting his head to the side. "Really, now... you do seem more sociable than most others I've met around here." He had, indeed, met quite some mean creatures, obsessed over territory and power to the point of corruption. Ah, again lay another issue with this thirst Varaki had to slake... but he would never let something like this happen. "Ryker, then? My name is Varaki." Finally, he knew this one's name. "In any case, your conversation skills are just fine... and there is just as much, if not more, value found in silence than in speech."
